WHAT IS A FILM EDITOR

In a nut shell producing an independent film goes like this; A producer gets an idea to make a film, so he finds a screen play, he get a director to change the screen play, which is the movie printed on paper, into video. So the director starts changing all the sentences in the screen play into their video equivalent. Now you have all these little video scenes or clips, which were the sentences in the screen play. Now you need an editor to put all these little video clips together, then he adds music and special effects to make it into the movie the producer wanted.-- theres a lot more than this that goes into making a movie but for point i'm trying to get across this pretty much what happens--.

So who made the movie? The Producer has his idea of how the movie should look. The director has his idea of how the movie should look. The editor now has his idea of how the movie should look. And the money people have already been sold on how the movie will look. Most of these people defend their domain with their lives.

The editor has a lot of control over the outcome of the film. He decides what stays and what goes. What music will be used, what special effects will be used and so on. Now he is limited to what has been given to him. The director has given you the film, and the sound people have given you the audio. Now you have to take what you have and make a movie.

A good editor can take a pile of shit and turn it into the best film ever, and a bad editor can take some of the best film ever shot and throw it to the dogs.

A good editor has to be in touch with his target audience. The movie is most likely being made to generate a return on the money that the investors have put up for the production of the film.

Thats why one should never edit his own film. Film Makers are artist. They are too close to the creative end. Emotion is what drives the artist, he makes fire out of stone. The editor will take this fire and turn it into something we all can enjoy. Remember the film most likely will be targeted to people that have no concept of what art is all about.-- That is why freedom of expression is protected in the constitution, at least in the US. So your average idiot can't do away with it because he can't understand it. Although your average idiot has been gaining a lot of ground these days."OH THE SKY IS FALLING RUN, RUN" Although with what has been happening in the world lately I've been looking up a lot more often.--

The job of an editor is to understand the artist and the non artist and build a bridge between the two. He has to understand all aspects of film making, audio, special effects, film, video, audience targeting, marketing, and just about anything else that involved with movie making and selling. Yes selling, because he's producing the end product that's going to be sold. That is a big job order. The good thing about editing is that if something goes wrong he's not mentioned, you don't see or here about the shit film that Mr. BlaBla the editor made. You here about the actors and the directors and sometimes about the producer but never the editor. But also when a film go great you wont here much about the editor, he's kept out of the lime light.

BUT YOUR A LOW BUDGET INDEPENDENT FILM MAKER

But your an indie film maker, and a low budget film maker at that; Well most likely your going to be involved with every aspect of your film. But the good news is you are going to have more control over the entire making of your film. Your not going to be asking "Who made this film." . But if your not careful you might be the only one watching the film..

But let me say this, there is nothing like producing a film start to finish. Friends may stop comming over but you will still have your film. It's me and my dog now, but I'm happy.

For the Low Budget Film Maker with his home cam corder I would say get Vegas 5 as an editing software because it will work with min memory and windows 98/me. For best results I get about one Gig of memory and Windows XP. It will run a lot faster and will make editing a lot easier because there won't be much if any lag. You will also be able to use Windows new file system that allows larger files.

Lag is when the audio and video don't match up when you are editing. Which makes it a lot harder to sync the sound with the video.

WOO WHATS THIS!!! THE SOUND DOESN'T MATCH UP WITH THE VIDEO!!!

Ya, the problem is if your working with large files with many tracts you home computer can't handel it all at once so you can get some lag depending on your computer system.

PROFESSIONAL FILM EDITING STUDIOS

The professional studios are not using you home pc to put together these Hollywood productions. They are using systems that have multiple CPU's, memory so large I can't remember, and hard drives as big as your average PC. But if you keep your files small and do a lot of rendering you should be able to avoid this lag.

What I mean by do a lot of rendering is for example, you have a file with many tracts of video or audio, render the clip to create a clip with only one video and audio tract and then add more tracts. This will compress all those tracts into one that will be a lot easier for your computer to handel, and therefor less or no lag.

Its not going to be easy to be a low or no budget film maker but it can be done. You just have to plan a lot more then if you had the budget to get what the Big Boys have. What I mean by that is once you render your video you can't go back and change individual tracts. So make sure you have it wright first.

HOW DO I BECOME A GOOD FILM EDITOR

The first thing you do is get a video camera. Not a film camera. Film is going to be too expensive to go hog wild. By going hog wild with shooting scenes you are going to have a lot of material to work with. Start out by just becoming familiar with the editing software. Then start to put little stories together. Copy music you write your self or record from other sources and try putting little music videos together. This will give you a feel for syncing action with audio. Watch a lot of movies and see how they put scenes together. Count the seconds between camera angle changes. This is very important. Our minds are set to a certain amount of time between angle changes. This is where your artistic abilities come in, by using different times you can start creating film that do unexpected things to your audience.

Just be aware that if you want to become good it's going to take a lot of work and a lot of time and money.

So remember:

Watch a lot of movies and actively check out how they are getting the story across.

Count the seconds between camera angle changes.

Read as many books as you can concerning all aspects of film making, as an editor you need to know it all.

Shoot a lot of video and edit the same video over and over with different changes to see how it effects the final outcome.

Start out by putting together small stories and work your way up to full productions.

Then once you have put together something you would like others to see, host it on the internet and add your link to this site for all the world to see.

Good Luck
