So you just bought your first camcorder and you want to start burning up disk space on Youtube, but you don’t want your movies looking like just your average home movies, You want them to look like they came from Hollywood.

You are the new bread of film makers, I call this new kind of film maker the “Camcorder Film Maker”. Like the Independent Film Maker the Camcorder Film Maker is not backed by Hollywood. Unlike the Independent Film Maker the Camcorder Film Maker has no idea whats he’s doing. Yet many Camcorder Film Makers have produced films that have commanded huge audiences on mediums such as Youtube and Myspace.

Although becoming a famous Director-Filmmaker-Editor-Producer have taken most people a life time to do, you want to do this in a week end and be watching your film on TV by weeks end. You have already burnt up 50 hours of film and you haven’t even opened the cameras box yet.

Well I’ll be giving you some of the most important basics on the difference between Motion Pictures and your every day home movie. Find out why your videos just don’t cut it and what you need to do to make them Hollywood quality.

Why Home Movies look like Home Movies

The reason home movies look like home movies is because we have been conditioned by the Movie industry to expect certain imagery to have a particular meaning. For example when two people are talking and the seen is of one of the characters looking to the right you expect that when the other character comes into view he will be looking to the left. Well that’s a no brainer you say. Not really, we have been so conditioned that we are led to believe that it’s a no brainer. What makes you think that the two characters are even in the same country never mind the same location to be talking with each other.

These conditioning’s involve every thing about the way we view a film or movie. There are rules that need to be followed for a movie to be perceived by us as being a movie. It’s the importance of these rules on our minds that allow us to spot a home movie right off the bat.

Have you ever seen a movie where someone in the movie is shooting a home made movie and the movie switches to the view of the home made movie? Hollywood makes the homemade movie look like a home made movie. That’s because our minds have been conditioned to recognize the tall tail signs of a home made movie.

These rules were so strictly followed that just up to a few years ago an editor would never think of being creative they would just cut and paste scene after scene following aver strict set of rules to tell the story as it was meant to be told.

What has changed?

The advent of the Independent Film Maker changed all that by changing the rules in such an ingenious way that is pleasing to the public. With these changes to the rules our minds began to welcome the surprises that we began to expect with Independent Films.

I’m Back

Now there’s a big difference between “changing the rules in such an ingenious way that is pleasing to the public.” and just shooting any which way and justifying it with ” I’m an Independent Film Maker”. It takes a lot of talent to buck age long conditioning with something that going to be viewed as “Ingenious” rather then “That’s just stupid” . First your going to have to learn the basics, and that’s going to take time and a lot of work. One of the best places I’ve found to learn the basics for free is at http://www.video101course.com/ .

But before the basics and before you go out and spend a lot of money you should know what your going to need to get started.

First is a camera or camcorder, you want to get a camera with 3 CCD’s. this allows you to do special effects with software on your computer. Also you want a camera that allows you to do most if not all of your adjustments like focus and light adjustment manually. This is also why many home videos have that home movie look. A camera’s auto adjustments have no idea what your trying to do, so the camera takes a shot in the dark as to what your trying to do.

Second is a fluid head tripod. The tripod should be rated for a camera larger then what your getting to ensure that it can for sure handle the weight of your camera if not you will have shaking in the video.

Third is a camera with at least a fire wire connection to connect to your computer. Fire wire is the best with the most data transferred to your computer.  You can use other forms but the results may not be as good.
